Experience
I have been teaching chess for almost five years now. My experience has included teaching for and directing after-school programs, instructing and managing summer-camps, and teaching one-on-one private lessons. Several teams I coached went on to win state competitions; others were runners up. Two teams that I worked with placed top ten in the nation; one student I worked with became the national champion for his grade level. I am eager to expand what I teach and help students with a diverse array of subjects. My main areas of study are philosophy and psychology. These two fields, especially philosophy, require a student to be highly capable in both writing and reading. Writing and reading are very general abilities; I have had a great deal of success in course-work of both subjects and would enjoy engaging with students and helping them to become successful readers and writers. Additionally, philosophy requires that its students develop a keen ability to parse through information using logical analysis and critical thinking. These skills can be taught and are critical to successful test-taking, studying, and scholarship in general. Thus, if a student is engaging in philosophy or psychology coursework, would benefit from improved writing and/or reading, or can use help developing test-taking and/or study skills, I am a reliable and useful asset as a tutor. I am currently vice-president-elect of Benedictine University's philosophy club. In accordance, this past year I worked with students to improve their scores in a variety of philosophy classes. One student was having trouble in a logic course, a field of study that can be very challenging. She ended up receiving a B+ on the final as a raw grade and an A after the curve with one of the highest scores in the class. Additionally, I worked with two students who had B and C papers respectively in a modern philosophy course and had been given the opportunity to re-write them. With some guidance, the B paper ended up being an A and the C paper became an A-. Lastly, I worked as a proofreader for a student taking a writing-intensive business ethics course. She ended up receiving perfect marks on her writing and an A in the course overall. Below, I shall attach a list of relevant courses that I have completed and my achieved grade. Note: all courses were completed in a grading system without plus and minus marks on final grades. Currently I have two potential subjects that I will explore before deciding between them: 1) the philosophy of Parmenides of Elea, especially his ontology and its potential ability to pose an alternative answer to the problem of an infinite causal chain which is normally addressed by invoking a prime mover, and 2) the ethical implications of current research on the topic of intelligence within psychology. But before that, over the summer, I will be using my free time to prepare for the GRE.
